New Single Review June 2007
well many new faces, old faces and faces that havn't been around much lately are showing there new work this month. it was an extremely tough decision to decide my favortie, but I did. Here's this month's list:
GUITAR SLINGER= CROSSIN DIXON - The latest group from Broken Bow Records, the same people who brought Jason Aldean and Craig Morgan to light. These guys bring a familier rock feel into their music that seems to define a lot of music from the label. I'm not sure how these guys will do though, the single isn't as strong as it probably could be. It draws attention to the classic country theme of pride as a musician and big dreams. It is a catchy song and a great dance tune, however I don't think it will bring the group into the same light as Broken Bows more popular artists of today.
NOTHIN' BETTER TO DO= LEANN RIMES - I've always been a big LeAnn Rimes fan and I'm lovin' this new sound to her voice. SHe shifts from her pop-country diva image that made her a multi genre sensation years back. In my opinion this song is much stronger than her other upbeat songs from This Woman. Her voice projects a rebellious yet sweet feel that perfectly fits the song. The song itself is in the perspective of a rebel girl who, in her small town life, can't find anything better to do than be a risky juvinile delinquent from stealing beer, to robbing a church to using her looks to get men to fight over her. When you listen to LeAnn's voice in the song you can actually here that same girl coming out and showing that despite the fact that her actions are inappropriate and risky she is enjoying them and has little worry of getting caught. I think its one of LeAnn's best and if this song shows where her career is going I'm following closely behind.
COUNTRY GIRL= RISSI PALMER - It's nice to see an African American female country artist join the ranks. And she's got the power in her voice of a true country girl. Despite radios rejection of the song due to its "on the edge" style its a very decent and catchy song, although it is meant mainly for women of course. The song encourages country pride among women despite where they live and explains that you don't need to live in the south or the country to be included in the croud of country girls. You don't need to be a farmer or horse-lover or even a cowgirl to enjoy it and woemn, and all people for that matter, shouldn't think that. A wise song and message for Rissi to release to the public, sadly it probably won't make an impact.
DAYS OF THUNDER= MARK WILLS - Mark has failed two times already to get back into the scene, one with Hank and rockin country song, and then Take it All Out On Me a romantic song. He tries again to reclaime his spot among the greats with a song about the past with a sound remanicent of 19 Somethin', a soung that fits him a lot better. This song remanices of the fun of the old days. It is meant to make the listener remaniss on their younger days of high school and college. Everytime I hear it I have to sing along because it's so damn catchy. I hope the rest of the radio listeners feel the same way.
NEVER WANTED NOTHIN' MORE= KENNY CHESNEY - Kenny continues to produce meanignful music without overdoing the concept of the song. This time he targets the significance of the simple things in life. It's good to hear something from kenny that isn't party or tropical based for a change. It brings back the powerful vocals of I Go Back, and like the song it also does not overdue to concept by showing off one particular moment or being to mushy. Kenny's songs just keep getting better to the point where I expect every one of his singles to be great, this is no exception.
PROUD OF THE HOUSE WE BUILT= BROOKS AND DUNN - I'm so happy to hear new music from B+D that sounds like the songs I love them for. Brooks and Dunn rekindle their traditional sound from their other famous fast paced anthems to produce another great optimistic song. The song remanises on the struggles the couple in the lyrics went through and the man is telling the woman thet he's proud of the work that they did to overcome those struggles and produce a home for themselves and a lovable life. The love they share that led them to the life they have is the one thing that will always last. No one could have pulled it off better than the dinamic due. Glad to here them back to their old sound instead of their hard rockin Hillbilly Deluxe type of sound.
THE MORE I DRINK= BLAKE SHELTON - Blake makes a bold move shifting from the emotionally powerful first single off his Pure BS album to a barroom anthem that brings out his influences from past greats. This is probably one of the best drinking songs I've ever heard and Blake proves here that he deserves more recognition than many give him credit for. The song, in its hilarity, contains a drinker who says the more he drinks...the more he drinks. Blake continues to impress me with his vocals and song choise and he is a brave artist releasing a drinking anthem which in this day and age seem to have faded sense I Love This Bar was a hit. Hopefully Blake will bring back the old country music spirit and bring the drinkin song back into country music.
LOVE ME IF YOU CAN= TOBY KEITH - Now this is the Toby i love to hear. His emotional and personal side. Toby may have a great reputation for his support of the troops and his party down anthems, but he puts that all aside here to produce a song thet will hopefully strike a chord with its listeners. The song makes a strong support for the singer or listener's position in life on many issues big and small and how many of his positions seem to contradict. He even goes so far as to draw Jesus into the matter. Providing one of my favorite quotes, he states "hate me if you want to love me if you can" because everyone knows where he stands although they may not agree. I hope this song hits home for a lot of people. I know its a very personal song for me.
YOU STILL OWN ME= EMERSON DRIVE - Not as strong as Moments, but a decent song non the less. The breakout group took three American albums to produce a #1, however I don't think this will follow. the song talks about having gotten over a girl, however she still owns him in his mind. It has the signature sound of Emerson Drive, however it also provides a solid country sound mixed in as well for an awsome result. Its not Emerson Drive's best work, but its decent and I hope it will help them continue their attempts to secure themselves as a solid group in country music.
TANGLED UP= BILLY CURRINGTON - I like this sound with Billy's voice. It's a new twist from his other songs. Billy produces another romantic tune, a fast paced sexy beat along with it. I think it works. It has a more rock-country feel and lacks the twang, but hey it works. It only proves that Billy's vocal talents range in different areas and can do many things instead of just one sound. This song shows off Billy's talent, and produces a catchy, upbeat song that is greatly enjoyable. I hope this shows a bright future for Billy. He has two #1s under his belt and has had all his songs hit the top 10. I hope this one keeps him in the game.
BAD FOR ME= DANIELLE PECK - Danielle seems to have a nack for singles that women can compare to. This one is no exception. She continuously addresses things that she loves, but are bad for her.....including her man. Its comical and a true country song in its own. Danielle seems to have difficulty making herself a valuable member of the country music community, but this song proves that she knows what she's doing by creating yet another woman anthem. She wonders why everything that feels so good is bad for her comparing chocolate and shoppings effects on her teeth and wallett to her bf's effect on her heart. I hope it keeps Danielle in the spotlight and helps launch her career back into full throttle.
THE STRONG ONE= CLINT BLACK - Clint releases the very first single he has recorded that he has not had a hand in writting. Maybe it will help bring his career back from hell. Having stars like Mark Wills and Little Big Town on his own label, Equity, Clint can afford a flop, but not several. I miss having Clint Black as a star. I wish he was a popular and loved and George Strait right now. He has a great voice, talent and taste in music. However this song may not do much to bring his career back..because someone beat him to the subject of the song. This song is much like Craig Morgan's Tough, but it isn't as deep and is more surrounding the housewife. Nevertheless, a great song and I hope it helps Clint make a comeback.
TATTOO ROSE= ANDY GRIGGS - I'm so thrilled to hear him back into the scene. Griggs hasn't had a hit sense If Heaven and I was afradi he had lost his career, but I guess not and I hope he has the chance to get it back. This song brings out the rock-country image that Andy has hid behind his unreleased songs. I think its a great unique sound for him and shows his personality better. He draws attention to his woman's tatoo rose and how it turns him on, etc. I think its an awsome song and I can't wait to hear more from Griggs. Hopefully he hasn't lost hope for his career to make a comeback because this song deserves a chance.
WAY BACK TEXAS= PAT GREEN - Although I am not a Pat Green fan, this song may grow on me. I've only heard it once and it sounds decent enough. A song about remanicing on a love of the past through a song or something that releases his memories. Recalling how they were going to marry and live life happily with children and such. Its pretty decent actually. Pat is a Texas mand and I first thought this song would be a Texas pride song..boring and old. However, it has actually impressed me. I'm kinda excited to see how it'll do.
AS IF= SARA EVANS - Oh my God this is the coolest song I've ever heard from Sara...EVER!!!! The song draws attention to the question of what issues will come around between the singer and her man, however the singer is actin as if nothing will ever go wrong. Take things as they come instead of worrying about wether something will go wrong or not. Not to meantion it has a catchy beat and awsome production that I can't get enough of. Sara produces a deserving single for her upcoming greatest hits album and shows what she can really do. Plain and simple, one of Sara's best songs yet and a great upbeat romantic song about letting go of your worries. LOVE IT!!!!
THIS IS MY LIFE= PHIL VASSAR - Another very personal song to me with Phil targeting the issues faced by everyday people from all extreames. Again I can't get enough of this song. Phil strays from his overdominant piano solos and combines a little piano in the lyrics with instrument combinations that only add to the masterpiece of the song. Along with that the song has a very personal feel to it that I'm sure will hit every listener that respects it with great power. In this day and age it is extreamly easy to be disrespected for ones position and place in society. This song shows respect and support for the everyman. I hope many people realize the significance and greatness of this song.
IF YOU'RE READING THIS= TIM MCGRAW - Without a dought this song earn my favorite of the month. Anyone who's anyone has heard this song from Tim's performance on the ACM Awards. Now an official release this song is one of Tim's best and one of the best I've heard in war songs sense 8th Of November. Tim delivers a powerful and emotional performance from the letter home of a troop who died in battle, giving the listener a first hand view of what its like to read and recieve a letter like that. The song is written in that persepective with the troop saying goodbye to those he loves in his family and friends. The most powerful line, "If You're Reading This, I'm Already Home", shows just how powerful a last letter home can be. This song is one of this years most powerful balleds. Hopefully radio will make it the hit it should be. There is so much that should and could be said about this song, but it would take me forever to explain it. With tough compatition, this song earns my favorite for the month.
