New Song Review January 2007
Hey guys, sry this review came a little late this time around. Well I'll get right to it, here's my review of new songs for Jan. 07.
THE MAN BEHIND THE HAMMER= JOHN SINES JR. - An excellent, inspiring song by the religious singer. It's the first I've heard of him on country radio and it's a really cool tribute to a grandfather who passes down a hammer used to make his famlies house etc. It remind the listener to take a look back on just how valuable their family is and what they did to make life better for their family and our future.
GUYS LIKE ME= ERIC CHURCH - YEE HA!!! A natural born country anthem not far from How 'Bout You but with a better beat and more creative instrumental combinations. Eric is deffinatly one of the more talented new comer and I think thrid times the charm with him. The song is from the point of view of a man who is aware that his lifestyle is not the best or the most prefered, a redneck who sticks to his hometown living on minimum wage and pumping gas, and finds it hard to believe and understand how a big shot girl that he loves loves him back. In the end of course he's thankful for it all. A cool, fast paced song that i look forward to hereing a lot more.
BABY'S GOT HER BLUE JEANS ON= SAMMY KERSHAW - Sammy's deffinatly a country classic, but with age comes the fall. He's had a good run, but I think he's on the same track as George Jones and Willie Nelson, planty of fans but not a big enough or new enough career to back him up. This is a great song, but you can tell in his voice it's not the best production. I don't mind hearing it when I'm in the mood, but it gets annoying quick. Not to mention this song doesn't stray far from Tennessee Girl so I hope he has some more unique music on the way.
SEPARATE WAYS= RICK TREVINO - An emotionally powerful song by this contry star. At one time he was a big as Mark Wills and ironically he still is right now. Both have great songs but for some reason lack the ability to make a legitimate comeback. Anyways this song is really powerful and a little misleading at first. It begins talking about a relationship that was perfect until they went their seporate ways and then talks from his point of view trying to make sure his relationship doesn't end that way. The funny thing is that it turns out his parents were the divorced pair from the beginning and that he doesn't want to make their mistake, he wants to prevent going their seporate ways.
IT AIN'T EASY= SHOOTER JENNINGS - The spawn of Waylon Jennings puts out his fourth single, the one I think sounds the most like a true blue country song his dad woulda loved, and the way he worded it it was inspired by Waylon. The song addresses shooters inspiration from his dad recalling how his dad assured him that life would not be easy and to remember you don't need to be perfect in order to make it. I think this is the best song he's put out yet. Shooter has become his dad, a rebel, and outlaw, and a powerful true country artist.
HEAVEN ON EARTH DOWN HERE= BEVERLY MITCHELL - I saw 7th Heaven once and never woulda guest this young lady would have a voice like she does. It's a pretty cool and very meaningful song about avoiding wasting your life and cherishing those little moments of love and rekindled memories while sitting back and watching the stars. Personally I think its a cool song, but from my experience movie stars turned musicians rarely get it big right away. I'll have to wait and see just how much more of this song I hear on radio and if its worth picking up her CD for it.
SAY YES= DUSTY DRAKE - Probably one of the most creative love songs I've ever heard. Dusty is a very cool, easy singer with a lot of emotion in his voice and he sticks to the classic tradition of creativity in country love songs. He addresses his love by stating that is the women would like to be in his wedding all she'd have to do is say yes. Hopefully this song will be overplayed because the song writting is very unique combined with Dusty's voice.
STAND= RASCAL FLATTS - OMG, It's about damn time. Rascal Flatts album is filled with superior and powerful songs, but this one is the first on the CD and deffinatly makes its mark on the listener. This song's meaning is a very popular one these days for country songs, but I'd have to say its the best of them all in that field. I mistook Cool Thing as their current single when it was only a teaser from XM radio, this song is deffinatly destined for success like every other Rascal Flatts song. The song states that when you are tested to your limit the only thing you can do is stand and get back on your feet. Thats the only way out.
LUCKY MAN= MONTGOMERY GENTRY - Whats cool about this song is that considering the beginning, it's been released in 81 different versions for sports teams. Anyways I really didn't expect this song to be MG's new single, but its deffinatly awsoem and revisits Montgomery Gentry more country side than their southern rock side. I love the meaning behind it too because it shoots down materialism saying that although the singer has littel to his name and is barelly making ends meat he is one of the luckiest man alive because he has everything he needs. Of course a deffinate hit, but its not very unique from other songs I've heard along the same line. It kinda strays from MG's rebellious personalities.
NOTHING TO PROVE= LONESTAR - Another song I was mislead to. XM mislead me to think this wasn't a single, but happily they were misleading. This song is probably one of the best on their Mountains album and hopefully their ultimate comback song. Lately they've lost their luster for one reason or another although they still have throusands of supporting fans. ANyways this song is really romantic with a lover speaking to his wife saying that she needs to take a break from the hustle and bustle of her busy life at home because as long a shes with him there's nothing she needs to prove. Unlike many hit singers Lonestar expresses uniqueness and veriaty in their singles and this one is no different.
MISSING YOU= ALLISON KRAUSS AND JOHN WAITE - A classic song remade into a country/bluegrass collaberation deffinatly unique in every way. Allison's voice is a new twist to it and John Waite, a British music icon, makes his first major American appearance on country radio. It's unbelieveable. The peformance is far from weak and I can't stop signign it. I remember the orignal from my parents when i was young and I'm happy to hear it re-done and remastered with its pride in tact for future generations and for my personal enjoyment as well.
A DIFFERENT WORLD= BUCKY COVINGTON - A former Idol finalist on Lyrics Street records, the birthplace of former idol Josh Gracin and country powerhouse band Rascal Flatts, so i expect a lot of him. SO I wish, so I am delivered. This guys got TALENT!!! I love this song and it is one of my favorites right now. A look back on the past and the good times and how different it was. I actually found myself looking back on the old days of my youth when i heard this song and it was happy and a little depressing in a good way. I can't wait to hear more from him. If he keeps this up he could match up to his fellow Lyrics Street bretherin.
LAST DOLLAR (FLY AWAY)= TIM MCGRAW - My favorite for the month and rightfully so. I CAN'T STOP SINGING IT!!!!! Everytime it comes on I can't stop i have to sing it. Not to mention its an awsome song about needing no more than what you have. My favorite line is in the beggining, when he says "if I ain't got nothin I got nothin to lose" or "hold me back". T=It's such a cool upbeat song with a really powerful meaning for me personally. You can be in the worse condition ever, but there will always be a bright side as long as you've got people to watch your back for as long as you remain around. I especially love that he added in cameo vocals from his little girls in the end, man such a great father he is lol. Anyways Tim has claimed my favorite song of the year, and %50 is that it's just so catchy and the other half is that its such a meaningful song to me.
